Curled, rusty leaves

Why don't those leaves fall off in the fall like every other leaf in the forest. Nooo!! they have to be individuals and fall periodically all winter cluttering my ski track and slowing me down.

Very good question. They do slow me down skiing. I actually try to step over them but I'm not always entirely successful. Luckily I haven't fallen down trying though... yet.
